Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Lower surfaces usually pale to white or reddish brown tomentose; blades coriaceous. Pinnately veined. Petiolate. Stipules present, small, caducous.

Flowers: Flowers in relatively open, branched thyrses. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx of 5 sepals, deltate, arising as lobes on floral tube, valvate in bud. Corolla of 5 petals. Stamens 5; filaments distinct, adnate to base of petals. Ovary partly inferior, partly enclosed by the adherent nectary disk and floral tube, 2–3-carpellate, 2–3-celled; ovules 1 per cell, basal and erect, anatropous; style short, 2–3-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit partly enclosed by the adherent nectary disk and floral tube; exocarp spongy and somewhat brittle; endocarp crustaceous; dehiscing along the ventral suture and partly down the dorsal suture. Seeds with a thin reddish aril; often completely enclosing the seed; pericarp ± falling away; seeds persistent on receptacle.
